You could be wondering what the website name has to do with me. Why pointing your browse to warpspeed.me brings you here. Well, not a lot of explanation other than me being not a lot inspired to create a website or blog name for my content. Other than that, I'm a Star Trek fan and always got intrigued about the myths behind the warp drives and how real this could one day be.

For those not following me here, the Warp Drive is a theoretical superluminal spacecraft propulsion system referenced in many science fiction books and movies, but more notably on the Star Trek movies when Captain Kirk and crew would jump into the outer space to explore new civilizations, planets and galaxies.

The directors and authors respects the dimensions of outer space and distances between planets and stars thus requiring a way to travel (faster than speed of light) and reach destinations in a reasonable time. The Warp drive is a way to execute it. But would be too easy to just make a statement and take it as a grant. The Warp drive theory has some science or theoretical knowledge behind it where explanations are easily found on the web or books. There are also youtube videos of scientists explaining details of warp drives and why this could or could not be feasible.

The Wikipedia article says "Einstein's theory of special relativity states that energy and mass are interchangeable, and speed of light travel is impossible for material objects that weigh more than photons. The problem of a material object exceeding light speed is that an infinite amount of kinetic energy would be required to travel at exactly the speed of light. This can theoretically be solved by warping space to move an object instead of increasing the kinetic energy of the object to do so. Such a solution to the faster than light travel problem leads to two directly opposite approaches to light-speed travel in science fiction: in the first, spaceships themselves are brought to light speed and beyond; in the second, not-yet-local space itself is made to come to the ship while the ship moves at sub-light speeds."

But what exactly how fast is a warp speed? Well, there's no single answer for that. But the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 registered Warp factor of 18.56 in one episode of the series (by the way, these are all Wikipedia information and factoids that can be easily googled. But if you are really interested in this thing and can spare US$30,00 there's the USS NCC 1701 Enterprise handbook available on amazon, that I would recommend, because it is a lot fun).

Anyways, why I named this website warpspeed.me ? No special reason other than think it's a cool name. I hope you enjoy some of the content here. If this sparks a hint of curiosity about Warp drives, Star Trek, Isaac Asimov, Einstein's Theory of Relativity and others, I'd be already happy. :)
